Some homeless individuals in Vancouver have migrated to the city with plans and dreams for their future. Unfortunately, high rents, a tight job market and/or adverse life events (e.g., relationship break-up, medical crisis, job loss, etc.) can result in these individuals becoming at-risk for homelessness or even living in an emergency shelter.
Returning to a chosen community where one has a historical support network and is familiar with service navigation may be a comforting and reassuring change in environment from being overwhelmed and isolated in Vancouver. The Homeward Bound program provides that opportunity.
The Homeward Bound Coordinator evaluates each request to make sure that housing and supports in the chosen community can be confirmed, and negotiates the supports available from family and friends to accommodate the individual while they settle in their new community. The program coordinator works with each individual to develop goals and a plan to assist them with the move and continues contact to ensure a successful transition. Once individuals are confirmed to be healthy to travel and have their belongings packed, they are accompanied to an embarkation point to start their new life.
