Recovery Café Vancouver

Streetohome is proud to partner with The Kettle Society (Vancouver) and the Recovery Café Network (Seattle) to bring a leading-edge recovery pathway to Vancouver – the Recovery Café.

The Recovery Café is a place of belonging where people pursuing recovery – whether it’s from, poverty, homelessness, isolation, mental health challenges, trauma, unemployment, or substance use – can participate in an intentional community of mutual support and work towards their recovery goals.

Recovery Café Vancouver is not a drop-in centre but a free membership model that supports members through a set of core interventions:

  • Recovery circles – a mandatory weekly meeting with a trained facilitator and 8-10 peers that involves participants holding themselves and each other accountable for achieving goals
  • School of Recovery – life skill development, activities, and classes such as budgeting, job-readiness, conflict resolution, meditation & mindfulness, creative writing, walking, gardening, and choir
  • Service navigation – of mostly free support services and opportunities in Vancouver
  • Communal meals – nutritious lunch and/or dinner
  • In-reach services – including health, legal, veterinary, and social services

Implementing an evidence-based recovery model originating in Seattle and replicated in over 30 communities throughout the U.S. was the primary recommendation in Streetohome’s Business Case on the Recovery Community Centre concept.

The Recovery Café’s flagship permanent location has opened and will support up to 300 at-risk individuals in their collective recovery. This will be the first in Canada with more likely to follow.

Thanks to the generosity of the Giustra Foundation, Vancouver Police Foundation and Tanjit Kalhar, the Kettle Society opened a pop-up location to ensure that prospective members can begin their journey and build a better future for themselves while the permanent site is renovated.
