Streetohome is partnering with the City of Vancouver and YWCA Greater Vancouver to redevelop a municipal fire hall in the Killarney/Champlain Heights neighbourhood. The new structure will provide 31 units of family housing for single mothers and their children who are fleeing abuse, are homeless or at serious risk of homelessness.
The City of Vancouver is seeking to leverage its civic assets to maximize the land use and create more affordable housing supply. A similar project, with the same partners, to build housing above the Downtown Eastside/Strathcona Library Branch is currently underway.
The safety and security of living above the fire hall, with a 24 hour, 7 day a week presence will provide reassurance to this vulnerable population. The location also provides supportive housing in a neighbourhood well suited for families, with many community facilities and schools nearby.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held November 28, 2016, and project is completed in December 2019.
Streetohome’s contribution of $892,000 to Pacific Spirit Terrace is made possible by The 625 Powell Street Foundation, MariaMarina Foundation and R. Howard Webster Foundation.
The R. Howard Webster Foundation makes grants to outstanding Canadian charitable organizations offering unique and inspiring programs or projects for the benefit, improvement and development of Canadian society.
The MariaMarina Foundation was established in 2009 in memory of Maria Holder and her daughter Marina Brewster, the mother and sister of the Foundation’s President Christopher Holder.
Both ladies died before their time (Marina in 1983 and Maria in 2004) and MariaMarina Foundation looks to recognise their passions and supports worthy causes in their memory.
