Sometimes, healing begins with a single, fragile hope – the hope that someone might finally see you.
For Brad, that hope led him through the doors of the Recovery Café in early 2023. He was waiting for a treatment space, carrying years of struggle, and simply trying to hold himself together. A pamphlet he picked up in detox nudged him toward the Café. Unsure and anxious, he walked in – but was welcomed without hesitation.
“The Café became one of my anchors,” Brad recalls. Just a few steady days each week – Recovery Circles, art and music therapy, counselling, group outings – gave him structure and the steady company of people who cared. In the Circles especially, he found a place to speak honestly and be met with understanding, not judgment.
Supported by Streetohome, the Recovery Café creates spaces where dignity comes first, and stigma has no place. Within this environment, Brad began to rebuild his life. The Café connected him to supportive housing – something he hadn’t had in years – and that stability became the foundation he’d long needed.
Today, Brad leads a Recovery Circle of his own, paying it forward and helping others find their path to recovery. “I’m grateful for people willing to look past the stigma,” he says. “Substance use does not define the person.”
What began as a hesitant step inside became the start of a new chapter – one shaped by community, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves a chance to begin again.
