On May 25, Theresa turned 66 – a milestone she is celebrating from a place of true stability, surrounded by a neighbourhood finally feels like home. It is a long way from how her time in Vancouver began. When she first arrived from Chilliwack, she planned to stay just two weeks. But the city’s energy drew her in, and she decided to unpack her bags and build a life here.

For years, Theresa lived independently and with confidence. Then an unexpected turn left her navigating a period of uncertainty – a time when she felt disconnected, unmoored, and unsure of her next step. That changed when she found her footing at Oneesan, a supportive housing community operated by Atira and made possible through the contributions of many partners, including Streetohome donors.

At Oneesan, Theresa found more than a safe roof. She found peace of mind. Regular health checks and on-site outreach support help her stay well as she ages, and the location keeps her close to the medical and community services she relies on. She especially appreciates that Oneesan provides a secure, welcoming home for her two beloved companions – her cats, George and Shadow.

With the weight of housing insecurity lifted, Theresa has been able to return to what grounds her most: contributing to the world around her. She volunteers routinely, stepping out to clean and care for the building so her neighbours can enjoy a warm, well-kept space.

"Theresa brings an incredible energy to the building," the Atira team shares. "She is someone defined by her tenacity, a sense of adventure, a persistent drive, and a genuinely bright spirit."

That spirit has made her a mentor for the next generation. Alongside 11 others, she guides youth living next door by sharing her lived experience and offering a steady, caring presence to young people finding their way.
